Nearly every dentist I meet is chasing the same scoreboard: more patients, more production, more revenue, more, more, more… And yet, despite putting up serious points, almost none of them feel like they're winning the game of wealth.
Why?
Here's what most business owners miss but any sports fan knows: it's not how many points you put on the board, it's whether you outscore your opponent. And in this game, your opponent is everything draining your financial progress.
So are you really winning the money game, or just running up a score that doesn't mean anything?
We've all seen the team with the explosive offense that still can't win enough games. Wealth building is no different. The ones who win consistently, year after year, are the ones with a relentless focus on defense.
Look at Michael Jordan's Bulls. Michael was the greatest ever to play, but they didn't win six titles because he scored. They won because they were a defensive juggernaut.
Same with Tom Brady. He gets the headlines, but it was New England's sophisticated defense that put them over the top in most of their Super Bowl runs.
You still have to put points on the board. But if you're giving away more than you're scoring, the result won't go your way. Not in sports, and not in money.
Here's the truth: most dentists who commit to running a real business, and not just being a great clinician, make good money. After working with hundreds of them, I can say it with confidence. The ones who get good at offense clear at least $400,000 a year, which is more than triple what the average American household earns.
And yet almost none of these "successful" owners feel wealthy.
In fact, it's the opposite.
Most of them feel stressed about money. They feel out of control. And here's the part that really gets me: according to the ADA, the average dentist retires at 70, while the average non-dentist retires at 62.
That's backward. So what gives?
The answer is simple. They're focused on the wrong goal.
Offense gets the glory. Defense builds wealth.
When it comes to money, making more is offense. Keeping it, growing it, and protecting it are defense. And just like in sports, offense gets the glory while defense gets ignored until it's so painful you don’t have a choice.
Why? Because most dentists are asking the wrong question.
They're asking, "How do I increase my income?" which is like a team asking, "How do I score more points?"
When what they should actually be asking is, "How do I build lasting wealth?" which is like asking, "How do I win the game?"
Those sound similar, but they're completely different questions, and the one you choose determines which game you ultimately play. Unfortunately, most dentists default to the first game while ignoring the second, and it's unknowingly costing them everything.
Because when you only focus on income, you create what I call the leaky bucket problem.
Picture it. You're thirsty, and your only water is in the bucket in front of you. But the bucket's full of holes. And no amount of water you pour in is going to fix that.
That's the trap most dentists are in without realizing it.
Lots of water going in, most of it draining straight out. And you don't solve it by pouring faster. You solve it by patching the holes first, then filling the bucket and reaping the rewards. That's how defense wins.
Unfortunately, when faced with a leaky bucket, most dentists pour in income, and they never patch the holes. The result after all that work, they've got almost nothing to show for it.
How to play financial defense
Any good defense is a system.
Your business makes good money on offense because you've built good systems and hired good people to run them. But when it comes to turning that income into personal wealth, into actually filling the bucket, most dentists have almost no systems at all.
A few examples:
You get the point. If you're operating by default, with no defined outcome, your odds of hitting your financial goals are almost zero.
The good news? It's not too late to patch your holes and begin winning the money game. I call this “fix” a Financial Operating System™, and it has 5 components:
This is how you win your financial championship
Once this defensive Financial Operating System™ is in place, it does something powerful. It consistently turns your business income into personal wealth, peace, and freedom. The kind you've earned and the kind you deserve.
Sure, it takes a little time, but because most dentists already make good money, the process moves much faster than you might expect.
Remember, wealth isn't built in the grind. It's built in the design. That means patching up your bucket because good offense and good defense together are the key and neither one is enough on its own.
And that, more than any single big income year, is what wins the game of wealth building.
